How powerful are the Olympic Games?

A non-violent march started in India a couple months ago as exiled monks were making their way to Tibet in hope drawing international to Tibet and its relationship to China. Some results so far: monks were forced to stop their march. Many Tibetans started rioting eventually killing people. People speaking about boycotting the opening ceremonies and interupting the Olympics torch relay. Anti-[somebody] sentiment growing. Conflicts between China's government and the Tibetan Government in exile lead by the Dali Lama arouse.

But after weeks of backlashing, officials on both sides met for discussions. Isn't this kind of an unusual accomplishment?

A terrible earthquake has just ravaged a highly populated area of China (Sichuan Province). Some results so far: thousands are either still trapped under rubble or dead, China's government is responding to assist citizens maybe faster than the USA did with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Chinese and international medias are producing detailed articles and offering live footage of the area which was "virtually blocked" during the 80s and 90s. china law blog

According to the same source, the english version of wikipedia has become unblocked too!! china law blog I remember being in China in 2006 and didn't have english wiki-access.

Did a miracle recently happen in China or something? They seem like they are doing great things to me. Why does it seems like good actions are taking place now when it appeared to be lacking in the past?

Does the Olympic Games have something to do with it? I mean the games put the international spotlight on China. So in that case, China should act in satisfying-manner to international medias or else a lot of bad publicity will be spoken against China's government.

The Olympic Games have become a powerful political tool to promote an image, and in China's case, they are promoting a positive one. Rather than hiding news or medias like what is being done in Mynamar flood response, China is becoming more open than it has in the past. Practically open doors for medias to cover the disaster area. In addition, China's response time to addressing issues has become increasing fast. I can't remember how long it was for China to meet with the Dalai Lama when conflicts between them arouse, but I can't imagine they are as fast right now.

In the end, a game is not just a game on the international level.

China earthquake response, faster than US Katrina response!
