Tecktonik in America?

Over the course of last week, CNN Int'l did a special report on France entitled "Eye on France". One particular subject that they covered was a new emerging style of music called Tecktonik. This genre of music is described as music/dance blended of hiphop and techno styles. It's becoming very popular in France and throughout Europe, although I have yet to personally meet someone that is in love with this music. I've heard a couple songs before.....it can be pretty cool, but then there are some songs that even I would turn down the volume.

Immediately I was thinking about whether this genre would become a hit in the USA. It's French, and so in that respect, it could be tough to overcome some biased sentiments. But the part that I wonder more about is the type of dance moves involved with this kind of music. Take a look at these two videos below. Reading different comments posted on YouTube.com and other sources, the comments left in French seem to be positive. The ones in English tend to include more derogatory statements referring to the dance as being gay.

Check out the dance for urself. As fun as the music can be, I don't think I'll be dancing like this anytime soon.....unless a few tequila shots are involved.

tecktonik isnt a genre of music, its the style of dance itself. the type of music the dancers dance to is typically some kind of electronica, be it electro, techno, hardstyle, or otherwise. there are products based off of the dance culture, however.

I don't find this kind of dancing very very different from the "normal" techno...
only the outfit is a little bit "girly"

Ok. As someone who knows this stuff, let me clear up the misconceptions Americans have with Tecktonik. The first video is classic Tecktonik dancing. The second, however, is Spoke, a a member of the group SMDB, which has rejected Tecktonik as no more than a brand and dubbed its dance Milky Way style dancing. Calling anything SMDB does "tecktonik" is not only wrong, it is insulting (to them).

Tecktonik is, in fact, a brand, owned by the owner of the club Metropolis (I forget his name). The club sells shirts and other tecktonik merch and holds tecktonik events at the club. Any use of the word tecktonik by another club is copyright infringement.

The incentive then for the formation of SMDB was a common understanding that a kind of dance shoudn't be owned by a person and sold like a consumer good, but rather enjoyed by all. It has spawned a sort of "revolution" in typical French fashion :).

The group SMDB are signed by Warner music and have produced two albumesque (not quite albums, yet not EPs) releases that include music tracks made for them as well as video clips and dance tutorials.

The current hype in France is very anti-tck (shortened form) and more recently Milky Way, claiming that they're nothing but an annoying group of kids who wear odd neon clothes.

SMDB recently has begun to shift its MO to a more conservative dress and tighter focus on dance rather than the "look". A documentary film has been made about them as well as tck dancers entitled Génération Electro, which was screened at Cannes. The three guys also created the website justelectro.com as the YouTube equivalent to electro dancing; ONLY electro videos are submitted (electro being the umbrella term for all sorts of electro dance, but mostly Milky Way).

There is a lot to be learned about this, and personally I've taken quite a fascination with it. Hope this comment helped those who don't speak French to understand this really cool phenomenon.

Also- all three members of SMDB are straight :)

Cher a real french person,

Thanks again for your imput!
